Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply to get a free web site on Powys Communities Online?
The funding for this project has come to an end, and Powys County Council is currently unable to offer any further hosting facilities for community and voluntary groups.

How do I update my website?
Go to www.pco.powys.org.uk where you will find an option on the front page which says "Existing Users LOGIN HERE". Click on the word ‘HERE’ and a box will pop up asking for your username and password. Key these in and you will be faced with the steps you used to create your website. A grey column will appear down the left hand side of the page on step 1 once you have a page created - you can select different pages to edit or delete by clicking on the appropriate buttons. Then just follow the on screen instructions until Powys Communities Online tells you that you can preview your site (its very important to follow the steps through to step 5 or all your updates will be lost).

How many pages can I have?
At the moment we are not setting a limit on this, although we may need to impose one at a later date.

How much does it cost?
The system is free to use for any qualifying organisation.

I don’t know how to update my web page - Help!
To update your website go to the front page of www.pco.powys.org.uk and click on "Existing Users LOGIN HERE" - the system will ask you for your username and password (if you haven’t applied to the project yet you will have to do so first in order to get your username and password) - if you key these in correctly you will then be presented with step 1 of the updating process. Follow the on screen instructions until the system tells you "Your WebSite has been Created"

I have forgotten my username / password - what is it?
E-mail the system administrator on pco@powys.gov.uk informing them of your problem. The correct username / password will be e-mailed to the e-mail address held by the system (in contact details) in two separate e-mails (for security reasons).

I have put an image onto my website which I want to use on more than one page - do I have to keep uploading it each time I want to use it?
No, Powys Communities Online remembers all of the images you have uploaded and saves them in your own folder. These images will be visible in the "clipart" list on step 4 - by selecting and viewing them here you can choose to put them on any of your pages. Your own images will always appear at the top of the list. If some of the images are faulty and you want them removing from your list e-mail the system administrator on pco@powys.gov.u .

I just updated my site but then when I went to check it, the updates hadn’t taken place and just the old content was there - what is going wrong?
Have you gone through the entire updating process by clicking ‘Next’ until the system tells you your site has been updated? If you don’t go through the entire process then the system will not be able to save any changes, and unfortunately you will have to do them again!

I want to change my e-mail address / organization name / contact details but I can’t find anywhere to do it
Organization and contact details can only be changed by the system administrator. E-mail the administrator on pco@powys.gov.uk if you want to get these updated.

I want to put my organization’s logo onto the website - I have a printed copy but how do I get it on to the website?
The first step is to get an electronic copy of the image. You may already have the image on computer somewhere, if not you need to get the image scanned in, using a scanner. Make sure the image does not appear too big on screen or this will ruin the look of your website. The image then needs saving as a JPG, GIF or PNG and must be under 40kb in memory. If you are unsure how to go about getting this done, contact your local telecentre or computerised community - to find your local facility go to www.telecentres.com (Print out this FAQ and take it with you). Once you have an electronic copy of your image in the correct format and size you will be able to upload your image at step 4 of the updating process on Powys Communities Online, by clicking on the grey "browse" button on step 4. Select your image (by finding it on your computer / floppy disk) when prompted, click on OK, give the image a title and click on next. If there is a problem with your image the system will tell you about it, otherwise it will have worked. The image will then be stored in memory and if you want to use it on other pages you can select it from the clipart list at step 4.

Some of the pages on my site won’t display, instead an error message says "The web page requested cannot be found on this server"
There are two possibilities here. To begin with, can you see ANY of your web pages? If you can but there are also some that you can’t see then it is likely that a technical error has occurred. E-mail the system administrator on pco@powys.gov.uk if this is the case. If you can’t see any of your webpages then have you sent your project agreement form back? If not, the only way you can view your pages is by logging into the site as if to update it and then to go through each step until it says "View Your WebSite" - this will enable you to see that your web site is working - it won’t be visible to the rest of the World until you send in your project agreement form. If you have sent in your form, send an e-mail to the system administrator telling them the problem, and stating that you HAVE sent in a project agreement form.

The image I have put onto my website looks too big - how do I get it smaller?
You need to use a piece of graphics software which will resize images. If you don’t have access to anything like this, contact your local telecentre or computerised community ( to find your local facility go to www.telecentres.com). Once you are happy with the size of your image, upload it to the system as you did originally, and select it for your page.

When I try to put a graphic on the website, it tells me "The image is too large or is in an incorrect format. Please only upload images in gif, jpeg or png format of less than 40kb"
There are two things to check here. To begin with, what FORMAT is your image saved in? The Web can only support graphics with JPG, GIF or PNG suffixes. BMP files won’t work. Secondly, how big is the file (in memory) - anything above 40KB will be rejected by the system because otherwise, your website will take too long to download. If you are having problems understanding what we mean by image formats and memory sizes contact your local telecentre or computerised community - to find your local facility go to www.telecentres.com (Print out this FAQ and take it with you).

When I type in my username and password the system tells me "You have been denied access to this page" - what do I do next?
To begin with, you need to close down your browser (the piece of software you are using to look at the Web) . Once you have done this, go to the front page of www.pco.powys.org.uk and try logging in again, taking care to type in the correct username and password. Remember, the password field is case sensitive, so for example, 'dog' is different from 'Dog'. If you still cannot get access to your website, e-mail the system administrator on pco@powys.gov.uk telling them what password and username you are using to log on.
